SCOTT CITY, Kan. (WIBW) - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is investigating the cause of death for 57 wild horses that had been transferred to a corral in Scott City. This investigation is crucial as it seeks to understand the factors leading to these unfortunate events.

The BLM manages over 49,000 wild horses and burros on rangeland and 47,000 in open pastures and corrals. This extensive management effort highlights the importance of understanding and mitigating risks associated with the relocation and care of these animals.

In March, a contractor in Kansas notified the BLM that it would continue a contract for care, but for fewer animals. This decision was part of ongoing efforts to manage resources effectively while ensuring the well-being of the horses.

On August 5th, the group that had received almost 1,500 mares notified the BLM that 57 of the transferred mares had died. This alarming report prompted immediate action from the BLM and other authorities.

BLM personnel and a USDA veterinarian began investigating the deaths and the facility. Their involvement underscores the seriousness of the situation and the commitment to uncovering the truth behind these deaths.

Preliminary results indicate the deaths were due to the age of the animals and stress related to relocation, with no infections or contagious diseases involved. This finding provides some relief but also emphasizes the need for careful management during such transitions.
