BLM Honors Team for Wild Horse Population Control Efforts
MESA COUNTY, Colo. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has recognized the efforts of a dedicated team working to control the wild horse population in Colorado. The team was awarded the Colorado Volunteer of the Year Award for their innovative and humane approach to population management.
The volunteers are part of a darting team that administers contraception to wild horses. They are responsible for tracking which animals have received the treatment, ensuring the population remains balanced and healthy.
"It does so much for the horses, and the range and the wildlife that I'm just so glad to be a part of it," said volunteer Georgia Manus.
The team emphasizes that this method is a humane way to control the population and help the animals thrive. The program has been successfully implemented since 2002.
