BLM Gathers 286 Horses in Eastern Nevada
In a recent effort to manage wild horse populations, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) gathered 286 horses in eastern Nevada. Despite this action, the number of horses remaining on the range still far exceeds the agency's 'appropriate management levels' (AML) for the area.
Details of the Roundup
The BLM's Ely District oversaw the removal of 105 horses from outside the Silver King Horse Management Area (HMA), located about 90 miles south of Ely, and 181 horses from in and around the Triple B management area, approximately 30 miles northwest of Ely.
According to the BLM, hay and water were used to attract the horses for capture. The gathered horses were then transported to the National Wild Horse and Burro Center at Palomino Valley, north of Reno, where they will be prepared for the BLM’s adoption program.
Population Concerns
The federal government's AML for the Silver King HMA is set at 60-128 wild horses, yet the current population stands at 807. Similarly, the Triple B area has an AML of 250-518 wild horses, with the current population exceeding 1,400.
Gather reports are available on the BLM Ely District website. Read more here.
