COLD CREEK, Nev. — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has euthanized 28 wild horses during a roundup in Cold Creek, about 30 miles west of Las Vegas. This decision has sparked concern among local communities and animal rights advocates.

BLM records indicate that 202 horses have been gathered as of last Friday. These horses are being sent to federal holding pens or adopted out. It is estimated that more than 400 wild horses reside in the area.

The BLM initiated the emergency roundup on August 29, citing that the horses "are in very poor condition" due to the ongoing drought. The agency listed a "poor prognosis for recovery" as the reason for the 28 euthanizations.

On Friday, 16 wild horses were put down, followed by 11 on Thursday. The website for the roundup operation states that it has been suspended.

The Cold Creek horses represent the last wild herd in Southern Nevada and are cherished by the local community, which has opposed BLM roundups for years.
