Activists Rally Against Capture of 200 Feral Horses
Animal rights activists in Calgary are set to rally against the provincial government's decision to capture 200 feral horses. The activists are urging the government to reconsider and explore alternative solutions to manage the wild horse population.
Government's Capture Decision
Last month, the province announced its plan to issue permits for capturing 200 feral horses as a population control measure. Once captured, the responsibility for the horses falls on those who catch them.
Activists' Concerns
Anita Virginillo, representing Calgary Animal Rights Effort and Lethbridge Animal Rights Effort, expressed her disapproval of the government's decision. She alleged, “The majority of these horses will end up in a slaughterhouse.” Virginillo advocates for exploring other alternatives, such as adopting out younger horses or administering fertility drugs to mares to prevent pregnancy.
Virginillo also highlighted the natural mortality rate, especially given the harsh winter conditions and the impact of last spring's flooding in Southern Alberta. “Nature takes care of itself as long as humans remain out of it,” she emphasized.
Government's Response
Carrie Sancartier from Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development stated that one capture permit has been issued, with more expected. She mentioned that contraception was not considered this season due to its experimental nature, potential high costs, and tight timelines. However, she noted it is “definitely something we’re going to be looking at for future feral horse management.”

Upcoming Rally
Virginillo has organized a rally to protest this year's capture, scheduled for Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at McDougall Centre, 455 6 St. S.W. She is also encouraging people to support an online petition by searching “Alberta’s Wild Horses” on change.org.
