A Time to Give Thanks: Protecting Wild HorsesA Time to Give Thanks: Protecting Wild Horses

Thanksgiving is a time for reflection and gratitude, but for wild horse advocates, it brings a mix of emotions. The challenges faced by wild horses this year have been significant, with legal battles lost and herds removed from their natural habitats. The Salt Wells roundup stands out as a particularly painful event, highlighting the ongoing struggle to protect these majestic creatures.

The Salt Wells Roundup

The Salt Wells roundup has been a devastating event for those who care about wild horses. Unlike other roundups, where some horses might be released, this time every horse was removed. Witnessing such events is heart-wrenching, as horses are driven by helicopters into traps, separated from their families, and taken away from their homes forever.

As the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) continues to remove horses from the checkerboard area of the Salt Wells herd, the pressure from local ranching groups like the Rock Springs Grazing Association (RSGA) is evident. The BLM's decision to zero out herds and reduce populations is a response to this pressure, starting with Salt Wells.

Observing the Roundup

On the second day of the roundup, the cold weather added to the harshness of the event. Despite recommendations against removing horses in such conditions, the BLM proceeded. Observers, including myself, watched as horses were driven into traps, their fear palpable. The contractors handled the horses efficiently, but the lack of padding in the processing areas led to unnecessary injuries.

The Impact on Foals

The separation of foals from their families was particularly distressing. One paint foal, separated from its family, tried desperately to reunite with them. Although foals are separated for transport safety, the emotional toll is significant. The reality is harsh, with less than 10% of rounded-up horses being adopted, leaving many to languish in holding pens.

The Fight Continues

Despite the challenges, there is hope. The fight to save the Salt Wells herd and other wild horse herds continues. Advocates are encouraged to contact their Senators and Representatives to oppose the BLM's actions and support ongoing litigation efforts. Donations to organizations like The Cloud Foundation can help fund these legal battles.

As we give thanks, let us remember the wild horses and the ongoing struggle to protect them. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a future where these magnificent creatures roam free.
