A Holiday Rescue of 22 Burros
On the night before Christmas, while many were enjoying festive celebrations, a dedicated team was working tirelessly to save lives. This is the story of a miraculous rescue that saved 22 burros from slaughter, thanks to the collaboration of Skydog Sanctuary, Auction Horses Rescue, and American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign).
(Jan 4, 2023) 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house…Not a creature was stirring, not even a mou… well, the staff at Skydog Sanctuary, Auction Horses Rescue, and AWHC sure were.
Because rescue never stops, not even on Christmas, and this year was no different.
We received word from Auction Horses Rescue that a load of 22 donkeys – mostly BLM burros and many of the females that were pregnant – were being directly shipped to slaughter, without ever being advertised for rescue.
Their death deadline? Just one week from when we were alerted to them.
If it weren’t for the collaboration of Auction Horses Rescue who alerted us to their plight, Skydog Sanctuary who provided transport, funding, and a short respite for the burros at their Malibu sanctuary, AWHC who helped fund the rescue, and Oscar’s Place who will find homes for all the animals, 22 lives would have been lost.
But thankfully, their story ends differently – they were saved just in the nick of time.
It’s heartwarming moments like these that remind us why we work so hard, why we work through the holidays, when we’re supposed to be spending time with family, and why we will never give up the fight for a better future for all our wild horses and burros. And why we are so grateful for each and every one of our supporters who put their trust, faith, and belief in us to make a change.
We are so excited to report that all 22 burros have landed safely at Oscar’s Place and are well on their way to finding their forever homes, and we know they will never have to go through the same trauma again. If you are interested in adopting one or just following along with their story, be sure to follow Oscar’s Place on social media.
