$5,000 Reward Offered for Information on AZ Burro Shootings
PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) - The Humane Society of the U.S. is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those behind the shooting of two wild burros northwest of Phoenix.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) reported that a resident discovered two mature burros west of Castle Hot Springs Road on Sunday.
Authorities believe the shooting occurred around 2 p.m. that day within the BLM's Lake Pleasant Herd Management Area in Maricopa County.
Rem Hawes, the BLM's Hassayampa Field Manager, urges anyone who saw or heard anything on Sunday afternoon to come forward.
Wild burros and horses are protected under the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971. Fewer than 7,000 wild burros remain on BLM lands in the West, with more than half located in Arizona.
Suspects in the shooting could face up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.
Anyone with information on the Lake Pleasant burro killings is asked to contact the BLM at 800-637-9152. All calls are confidential.
