The McGee Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA)

The McGee Mountain Herd Management Area (HMA) spans 41,600 acres in northwestern Humboldt County, Nevada. This area is a prime location to observe wild burros, offering a unique glimpse into their natural habitat.

How to get there:

The McGee Mountain HMA is situated approximately 90 miles northwest of Winnemucca, Nevada. It is bordered on the north and west by the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, which is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

About the Burros

The HMA is home to an estimated 50 burros. These animals are descendants of pack animals once used by miners and sheep ranchers. Most of the burros in this area exhibit a gray color pattern. Due to limited water availability within the HMA, the burros often utilize the Craine Creek/Gridley Lake area east of McGee Mountain, extending up to the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge fence. It's important to note that burros on the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge are not managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
