The Big Bear Wild Burro Territory (WBT) is a remarkable area managed by the Big Bear Ranger District within the San Bernardino National Forest. Spanning 35,000 acres, this territory offers a unique opportunity to observe wild burros in their natural habitat.

How to Get There

The Big Bear WBT is located in California, approximately 10 miles east of Big Bear Lake in southwestern San Bernardino County.

About the Burros

The territory is home to a managed population of 60 burros. These burros are primarily gray, with adults weighing around 500 pounds. They are typically found east of Big Bear Valley, frequenting areas such as Broom Flats, Arrastre Creek, Round Valley, and the Rose Mine area. These locations are accessible via Forest Road 2N01 and 2N02. Occasionally, burros can also be seen in Lone Valley on Forest Road 3N03. The best times to spot these animals are in the early morning and early evening.
